A Message from the Dean

Since establishment in 1991, the College of Engineering at the National Chung Cheng University has been actively pursuing the goals of academic research excellence, cutting-edge technology development, and collaboration with industry. Currently, the College of Engineering consists of five departments and one graduate institute with more than 100 faculties and 2,700 students. About 40% of the students are graduate students. Though the college is very young, we already have demonstrated excellent performance in the academia. In 2011, funded by the top university project from the Ministry of Education, Taiwan, the Advanced Institute of Manufacturing with High-tech Innovations (AIM-HI) was established focusing on the research of intelligent green manufacturing technologies. According to the performance ranking by the Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan (HEEACT), our college is ranked as top 1% college worldwide. In 2010, we were ranked 5th in computer science and 9th in engineering nationwide; in 2012, we were ranked 7th in computer science and 9th in engineering nationwide. Our pioneering research results in the System-on-Chip (SOC) design have been presented in several prestigious international conferences such as ISSCC, ICCAD, DAC. Each year since 2008, our students have won the first prize or the second prize in the Student Design Competition, IEEE International Microwave Symposium for six consecutive years.

The education goals in our college of engineering include training students to be self-motivated, innovative, pursuing excellence, skilled in interdisciplinary collaboration, and to have a global vision. We have provided students with different kinds of laboratories, innovative and advanced courses, and excellent learning environment with emphasis on inspiring students to be highly innovative and prepared to explore all kinds of challenging research issues and in cutting-edge technologies. We expect our students to become future leaders and entrepreneurs. All programs offered by our college have been accredited by the Institute of Engineering Education Taiwan (IEET).

In the coming years, we will be focusing on accomplishing two missions. The first mission is to strengthen international collaborations, including research collaboration through joint projects, increasing the number of courses taught in English, conducting summer schools with English courses, establishing international graduate programs for the Master and Ph.D. degrees, and encouraging more international exchange of students, especially graduate students. With more international cooperation, we expect to enhance students' global vision and promote the reputation and ranking of our college worldwide. The second mission is to encourage our faculty to form research teams with focus on unique and cutting-edge research topics. We will actively promote the founding of cross-university and cross-country research teams such that not only the research team member can develop his/her own research potential, but the research team itself could also become world-class research team with global influence and reputation.

With the outstanding research capability of our faculty members, it is our firm belief that we have a very promising future. We challenge ourselves to be ranked in top 500 worldwide and top 100 in Asia. Furthermore, for at least some fields, such as computer science, we set our goal to be ranked in top 200 worldwide.
